Cold rooms are a great solution for businesses across most food and hospitality industries; not only do they provide you with extra space to carry out your catering duties, but they also enable you to store produce at a lower temperature than normal fridges, ensuring that all your fresh produce remains safe and usable all day - or night - long.

But can a cold room be moved around? In this blog, we're going to go over everything you need to know about cold room hire; what it is, its benefits, and whether or not cold rooms can be moved. Let's take a look.

What is cold room hire?

Cold room hire is the process of hiring a refrigerated room for either short-term or long-term use, typically for catering and hospitality businesses. Generally speaking, these rooms come in two forms: mobile cold storage units, which can easily be transported to different locations; and permanent cold rooms, which are much larger and less portable.

At Ice Cool Trailers, we offer two types of cold room:

  • A cold room - Our cold room hire service is ideal for brick-and-mortar catering businesses, and is always installed by one of our team when we arrive at your location. The cold room is fixed to a specific spot in your property or home, and cannot be moved after installation is complete.
  • Freezer hire - For more portable options, we offer a freezer hire service that supplies you with a mobile cold storage unit that can be transported by van, truck or trailer. Our freezers are perfect for events and outdoor catering businesses, as they are easily transportable to different locations.

What are the benefits of a cold room?

For bars and restaurants, event planners to caterers, here are just some of the benefits of a cold room:

Save on space

Cold rooms are a great tool for saving space; in providing extra storage (which is both easily accessible and maintained at the perfect temperature) you're able to better utilise the space in your current kitchen, allowing you to store much larger quantities of food than you could in a regular fridge or freezer.

Reduce overhead spending

By purchasing ingredients in bulk and storing them safely in your cold room, you can save yourself money on frequent trips to the supplier or supermarket; this means more profit for you, and reduced expenses over time.

Food safety

As mentioned previously, cold rooms help keep your produce fresh and safe - much longer than it would be in a standard fridge/freezer setup. This reduces waste as well as ensuring that all food served is of the highest quality - a piece of bad meat can ruin a caterer or a restaurant's reputation, so it's always good to ensure optimal hygiene practices in the kitchen.

Can a cold room be moved?

As we've discussed above, there are two types of cold rooms: those that are mobile and those that are permanent; only a freezer trailer is moveable, although we don't offer self-towing freezer trailers; we move and transport all freezers back and forth from your location.

Why can't a cold room be moved around?

Most cold rooms are designed to be either mobile or permanent; while it is possible to move a mobile freezer between locations, it's not possible to move a permanent one. Depending on the size of your cold room, you may need specialised vehicles or machinery in order to transport it safely, and attempting to move it yourself could end up causing you injury, or damaging the cold room itself.

What is the difference between a cold room and a freezer trailer?

The main difference between a cold room and a freezer trailer is the installation process; a freezer trailer is simply dropped off at your location, whereas a cold room has to be installed by us at your premises. In addition to this, cold rooms can be installed both indoors and outdoors, while freezer trailers are intended for outdoor use only.
